A little bit about Rye...
The Rye Sock pattern has become a go-to option for many knitters—and for good reason. Designed with both clarity and comfort in mind, its detailed instructions are approachable, even for beginners. The pattern is from The Simple Collection, a series of 12 free patterns designed for newer knitters. Each pattern contains full, clear instructions to build confidence and skills. For more experienced knitters, they also make fantastic projects for mindless knitting.
The pattern’s construction features:
- A top-down structure (easy to fit as you knit).
- A simple garter panel, adding interest and texture.
- Multiple sizes, from newborn to toddler, so everyone in the family can enjoy their own socks!

Materials and Preparation: Colour choice and needles
For these socks, I used our new Campfire colourway on our Gráinne sock base. Gráinne is a beautiful 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool and is my go-to choice for socks. It's hardwearing, holds its shape well, and offers excellent stitch definition. Plus, it's superwash treated, making it easy to pop in the washing machine when needed. I knitted a size M.
Other materials used were:
-
40cm circular needle in sizes 2.25mm & 2.75mm (US #1 & #2). I used the Magic Needle method, but you can also try the Crasytrio set by Addi.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch markers to track sections
Knitting The Pattern
The Rye socks are knitted top-down and worked in the round, beginning with a classic ribbed cuff. What makes the Rye design that little bit different is its garter stitch panel—a textured stripe that runs along the top of the sock, breaking up the stockinette fabric and adding visual interest. This feature is simple to knit and creates a relaxing project with just enough detail to keep things engaging.
Knitting the heel, which can be intimidating for beginners, is made easy thanks to the Rye Sock instructions. The flap and gusset method helps ensure a perfect fit over the ankle. This is always my favourite part when knitting socks, as watching the heel shape take form makes the project come to life.
Once the heel is complete, working down the foot is plan sailing. The toe shaping, finished with a straightforward grafted seam, neatly closes the sock. Throughout the project, the pattern’s clear directions ensure you always feel confident and don't get lost.
I’m so pleased with how our Campfire colourway turned out on these socks. The frequency of the colour repeat creates a beautiful self-striping effect, especially on a project of this size. This cosy colourway is perfect for making comfy socks, and the simple Rye pattern really lets the colour changes shine through. Plus, it’s a great gender-neutral choice that suits just about anyone!
Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable knitting project that provided a lot of satisfaction from start to finish. Thanks to its straightforward pattern and quick progress, it’s the kind of knit that can easily be completed over a relaxing weekend. So whether you’re looking for a creative way to spend your downtime, or simply want to finish a project in just a couple of days, this pattern is perfect.
